Dartmoor. The Cherrybrook is situated in the centre of the High Moor.
A stout belt of beech trees surrounds the 3.5 acres of grounds, sheltering us from the worst of winter storms. A stream winds it's way through the gardens - as you would expect there is an abundance of wildlife here. So much so that we have a report from 'Wealth of Wildlife' identifying literally hundreds of species of plants and animals all within the boundary of the Cherrybrook.
If you set off on foot, within an hour’s walk of the Cherrybrook you can see:
Wistmans Wood (National Nature Reserve).
This magical woodland has gnarled dwarf sessile oak trees, cloaked in luxuriant mosses, lichens and ferns and is one of the most famous (and oldest) woodlands in Britain.
Lower Cherrybrook Bridge.
The river here (the West Dart) is a haven for Salmon. The water is clean and shallow, the loose gravel bed allows the fish to carve out their nests or 'redds'. This area has been designated as a ‘Wildlife Action Zone’ along with 3 other sites on Dartmoor.
Wild Salmon are becoming increasingly rare, whilst in their freshwater habitats they are protected under European law.
Crockern Tor.
The ancient Stannary (Tinners) Parliament meeting place for Dartmoor.
It is more or less equidistant from the four stannary districts where the ‘Old Men of the Moor’ convened.
When travelling by car, you may visit:
The city of Plymouth with its famous Barbican, Hoe and National Marine Aquarium.
Ancient market town Tavistock, it's old fashioned pannier market held on most days of the week.
The internationally famous 'Eden Project' is also an easy drive away.
